Lesson #20

1. How to become fluent in 2019 - And a Happy New Year! Let me draw the bottom line of our studying process - we tried to do smth aiming at our improvement in English speech in the 2018. At least we really tried - and had got some achievements! We did what we could! This year we must do it more and maybe better. So, go on, my dear! And we'll succeed - I have a strong belief in your and mine success!

2. Grammar Time!

Our today's theme is Sequence of Tenses! Awfully hard - you'd say the other days - but not with me! Because... Ready. Steady. Go! You only do what you need - without this ...hmm... stupid reflections - I never could.. it's difficult... it's impossible.. Oh - it's so boring! Just begin - and everything will be Oll Korrect! OK?!

So, I was here feeling about this tremendously awful sequence of tenses - especially on YOU TUBE. And here is what I've scratched in the Pinterest:(am I a copy/past King - or what am I? And why would not?). Here you are!

a) first is the Past - then - the Present - and only after it - the Future!

b) the rules are rather simple - but there are exceptions! (Perfectionists have to wait for another time!)

c) Just remember this little table - and you'll be in perfect order with your Grammar!

d) if you still are in great need for examples - enjoy them, please!

e) mostly we need this pretty good theme for transferring Direct speech into the Indirect one! That means - when we have to do some tiny changes - for instance, - from  'here' to 'there' , or 'today' to 'that day', or 'tomorrow' to 'the following day' etc...

f) and here is the other little table to remember - but... better to understand...

g) snack with some rules - all our living is under the rules.. but... only when mistakes are corrected!

And can you tell me now that you've seen anything easier in your life? Do you know why? Because the visual info comes to our brain 5 times quicker than the verbal one! Prosit! Oops...

3. The last part of our Slang List. I'll try to be concise - and, please, keep in mind - I do not want you using it - not at all! All I really want that you become familiar with the spoken English, and what is more - with its American variant - only for films sake! Oh, it's a dream of every tutor - pupils who have achieved - let it be the only one - their little goal! But it would be my great success as a tutor! And that's smth to be proud of!! In addition -  I'm so thankful for your priceless efforts! Indeed!

- KIP

BrE: short sleep Am - nap):

Why don’t you try and have a kip before everyone gets here? You won’t have time to rest later.

- WIND UP

It's 'to joke' or 'poke fun':

John really is a wind-up merchant, but the girl he was picking on was so gullible!

I was just winding her up for fun, but she took offence to it and got really angry!

- MATE

a friend, a roommate:

I’m going to the cinema with my mates tonight.

You're just my cup of tea!

- NOT MY CUP OF TEA

Bre - 'I don't like it!':

I don’t really like this sort of music. It’s just not my cup of tea.

- PORKIES

It's cockney shortened “porky pies”, which rhymes with “lies”:

Don’t listen to her, she’s telling porkies!

- ROW

It's 'a quarrel' which rhymes with 'cow'):

My brother had a huge row with his girlfriend yesterday. He’s really upset!

- DONKEY’S YEARS

“I haven’t seen you in donkey’s years!” equals "I haven't see you for ages!":

Hi Sarah! What a surprise to see you here. I haven’t seen you in donkey’s years! How have you been?

- EASY PEASY

Children's 'easy' (and not only children's!):

I could make that for you, if you like? It’s easy peasy!

- SORTED It's a sorted problem - that is - resolved!:

— What’s happening about that roof leak then?

— Oh that’s sorted now. I found a really good builder to do the job.

- STROP

BrE: means to become v-v-very angry, or just - being not in good mood...

Andrew, would you please cheer up? It’s your birthday, don’t be so stroppy! (do not be a bugaboo/beechwood!)

Stroppy baby!

- CHEERIO

Friendly - Bye!:

Right, I have to go now, see you soon. Cheerio!

- WANGLE

Tricky trick (mostly unfair!):

I can’t believe he managed to wangle the honeymoon suite in their hotel!

- BLINDING

Awesome! Enchanting!

They had a blinding party after their wedding ceremony. Everyone had such a great time!

- WONKY

Smth not stable:

I can’t eat my dinner at this table. It’s wonky!

- ZONKED

Am: exhausted, to be in prostration:

He had a lot of fun at his birthday party earlier, but he’s completely zonked out now!

- DODGY

Сunning, suspicious:

I saw a few dodgy-looking people standing around along that quiet street near our house, so just to be on the safe side, I notified the police.

This food looks a bit dodgy, it might have passed its expiry date. I don’t think we should eat it.

- LEG IT

The same as 'to run':

I went out on Halloween night, and someone jumped out from behind a bush to scare me. I was so frightened, that I just legged it all the way back home!

Got it - finally! And you really can reel all of them off! I do suppose it would be much more easier for you to socialise with English-speaking people!

Keep up the good work!

4. 20 Words - you'll sound so perfect! Omit the part you do not understand - just pay attention only to the words in the list. This guy from LA seems to know his job properly, and I propose you to make up sentences with words - but if you are a little bit tired with our previous item - just put them through our beloved Play Phrase.me - relax, it can be easy!

5.  Pray, listen to it - all I can tell you - it really impresses anybody! Of course, we all do know that the nowadays world's sign is Compassion... I'd like to add - Wisdom... And here is the third and very necessary part of it - Acting!
